Playing poker in a land-based casino is one of the biggest thrills of table gambling games. It is perhaps the source of the glamorous image that many people have in their minds when they imagine a visit to a casino, and one that has drawn in many gamblers with the hopes of one day becoming “the shark” at the tables.
If you’re looking at getting involved in the game the first thing to bear in mind immediately as you enter the casino is that the casino staff working there are charged with making your overall experience as comfortable and as enjoyable as possible simply because the establishment will want you to return in the future. Therefore, if you are having problems finding the card room, coatroom, or if you have any queries whatsoever, simply ask the members of the staff. As much as anything, the way in which they deal with your query will tell you a lot about just what kind of establishment it is and whether or not you should reconsider spending your time and money there.
Remember as well that the dealer at your table is also a member of the casino staff and if you are new to the game or to casinos don’t be afraid to tell the dealer that it is your first visit to a casino and to ask them to keep a special eye on you in case you should do something incorrectly by mistake. Some casino neophytes are stunned when they take this polite and respectful approach in order to find that the dealer goes out of their way to be useful and helpful in the light of such a request. Also surprising to some is just how helpful other players can be – particularly at lower-limit tables.
Some poker rooms also have somewhere that players sign in order to wait for a particular game. Some of these waiting lists are on a white board, which lists the games available and their limits with the initials of the waiting players, whilst others just simply have a person recording initials or names on a sheet of paper. All you need to do is ask whoever is in charge of the list to place you on the list for the games that you want to play. If there is no visible sign-up area where you are simply ask one of the dealers how you can enter the game.
Once you are seated at the table and ready to play remember to pay attention to the other players as they can often reveal more about themselves and their hands than they realize. Remember that it is considered good etiquette to tip the dealer when you win a pot. You can determine a fair level for tipping by observing other players in the game. Remember also to never act before your turn, as this can change a hand’s outcome and is thought of as extremely bad table etiquette.
Make certain also that your cards are in plain sight. It is also a good idea to keep your hands on your cards in order that the dealer doesn’t confuse your cards with discarded cards. In addition, don’t reach for the pot when you win – let the dealer push it to you.
