Believe it or not, the position of which you are at the poker table when playing is crucial in the game.  This pertains to that of an online poker room as well as a live casino poker room at your local or favorite land-based casino.  Majority of poker players are unaware of the fact that this is an integral part of playing poker and many of those aren’t even familiar with the term poker position and what exactly it means.  Majority of poker players also spend too much time on learning strategy for the game when they should be spending a little bit, at least, of that time on important pieces of the game that make the game, such as position.  If you are hoping to become a pro someday or want to expand your knowledge of the poker game further and hopefully improve your game, then learning what and how important poker position is is a good place to start.

Poker Position – What is it?

Position in poker refers to where you are sitting in comparison to the other players and more specifically, the dealer.  If you have an opponent on the left and right of you, then the player that sits on your left is going to play after you and the player to your right will play prior to you.  This means that the player to your right has an advantage over you, but you have an advantage over the player that sits to your left since he or she will play after you do.  More specifically, though, your position in comparison to the dealer is how position in poker is actually defined and will define whether you are the first or the last to play in a specific betting round.  If you are left of the dealer then you are first to play and if you are right of the dealer, then apart from the dealer, you are last to play.

In poker, position matters just as much as strategy does.  There are a lot of little things that are associated to poker that influences the game and the game’s outcome.  By knowing a little bit about poker position, you are able to have a fuller grasp on the game and you will know that depending on your poker position, there are certain hands that can be played.  You can also manipulate your opponents while protecting your hand all because of your poker position.

Best Poker Position

The absolute best position for you to be in in poker is the dealer position; however, unless you are playing at home, it’s unlikely that you’ll find yourself in this position.  Therefore, the best position is late position.  Late position refers to the last person that would act in a game of poker or next to last.  The further away from the dealer you are, the better in terms of poker playing position.  The player in this position is able to play last, which is very important in the game of poker.  You have the time to concentrate on your opponents, pick up their bluffs and habits, and be able to play accordingly.

Worst Poker Position

The absolute worst position for you to be in in poker is the very first position, which is ideally left of the dealer.  This position, also known as early position, is also the small blind position.  You must act first every single time, which is not the greatest position to be in when playing poker.  Because you are first, you can’t hold up the table and take a lot of time to concentrate or your opponents will get aggravated; therefore, you don’t have a lot of time to make your move or to concentrate on the cards in hand.  You will also be the player than starts the betting round.

Benefiting from Good Poker Position

A good poker position will allow you to gain advantage in the poker game.  By being the last one to act in the lineup at the poker table, then you will be able to take a close look at all the previous bets made by your opponents leading up to your play.  Being in late position, you have the potential to use all of the information from every single opponent at the poker table. You will be able to examine each opponent for bluffs and habits.  You will be paying attention to how quickly their bets were made as well as what exactly each one did when it was their time to play.

All of that information is available to you in late position and you can make the right play by using all of this available information to your own advantage to create leverage in the game and better the poker odds in your favor.  Being further away from the dealer, you have more time to properly calculate the poker odds while watching your opponents carefully and closely.  You can make much more clever decisions from being in late position.  In addition, you have a larger variety of hands, such as hands that have smaller odds and hands that are lower on the totem pole such as small pairs, which can be played when you are in late position as you can have a better take on what your opponents may or may not have in their hand.

Use all of the above information to create an advantage in your favor at the poker table when you know you are sitting in a good position at the poker table.
