Poker is a game requiring a number of different factors to be considered on a regular basis, ranging from simple card calculations and likelihoods of success with single hands down to analyzing your competitors and determining the best possible course to take at any given time. Developing the skills to handle all of these different scenarios on a regular basis can be a lengthy process for many, particularly in terms of learning how to read other plays for different types of tells to what hand they may hold, but thankfully there are a number of basic tells that players looking to develop their poker skills can bear in mind to help keep them in the game and taking home most wins than they may have thought possible otherwise.

Body Language

Pay careful attention to any small changes in body language a player may exhibit throughout the course of a game. One of the easiest ways to see if someone is nervous, for example, is to watch for any changes in behavior that come about in the form or nervous ticks or changes in personality in different situations. A large number of behavioral characteristics people show while under a lot of stress (such as in a heated poker game) are uncontrollable subconscious actions that people cannot control no matter how hard they try, and if they have been drinking this can be even more obvious. Common nervous ticks include hand gestures (tapping on tables or legs is particularly common), foot taps, head or face scratching, general face touching or even excessive drinking or smoking, so watch carefully for any increases in these beyond what is considered normal from your earlier observations of your opponents in calmer circumstances.

Another common tell of body language may also be small changes in behavior. Increased breathing, for example, could be a sign of an internal struggle. Biting of lips is also common for people when they are faced with a tough decision and should be looked for carefully among other players at the table while at the same time remaining conscious of your own actions to make sure you don’t exhibit any of these characteristics yourself.

Hand Plays

In addition to body language, how a player goes about playing a hand can be particularly telling as to what cards they may be holding or what kind of player they may be. Loose players, for instance, may be more inclined to play more hands that are moderately strong at best against other players almost all the time, whereas tight players tend to simply wait and play only the strongest hands possible in order to ensure their victory each round. Watching for these differences in play styles can help you anticipate what you may be going up against and adjust your own strategy accordingly in order to ensure that you are making the right move against each player depending on the situation rather than risking your money needlessly against someone who may easily call your bluff or destroy your hand with theirs if you see a round through to the end with anything short of stellar cards.
