When in late position, this means that either you are the last person to play around the poker table in the game or you are next to last.  In addition, this means that you have a larger variety of hands that you can play than those in earlier positions than yourself.

The further in position at the table that you are the more hands and the weaker hands that you can play.  You can wait further in the game before making a tough decision as well.  In late position, you can have a relatively weak hand, but still make it to the flop because of the late position advantage that you have.

By being in late position, next to last or the last one to act, then you have been able to watch every single opponent in front of you.  You know how many opponents are still putting in the pot and you are able to watch their bluffing habits and betting habits.  You can watch when and how much that your opponents bet or raise, which could say a lot about their hand at play.

You have a huge advantage because there are some hands that play better against a smaller amount of opponents while there are other hands that play better against a larger amount of opponents.  By being able to determine how many opponents are still in the game prior to your play, you are able to make an informed decision based on the hand that you hold and the amount of opponents still in play.

There is a lot of information to be retrieved in a game of poker and the later position you are at the table, the more information that you are able to capture and use.  Take the information and assemble it together to make a clear understanding and you will be good to go when you are in late position at the poker table.
