Born and bred as a Texan, David Anthony Williams is a professional American poker player.  Williams may be more commonly known as Magic: The Gathering Player.

Before beginning a path in poker, David was enrolled in an early college entrance program that then went on to study Economics at Southern Methodist University before then begin a student at Princeton University.

Williams earns his name well through the Magic Pro Tour.  He began playing in the Tour during the later 1990’s.  He earned one of the final positions in the final day of the event in the 2001 World Championships, which was held in Toronto.  However, Williams was disqualified without eligibility to earn any winnings or prizes due to the fact that he had marked cards.  It was decided that three of his four Accumulated Knowledge cards had been bent more than the other cards within the deck thus, making them easier to cut after his opponent shuffled.

When the decision went to the judging staff, they made the decision that Williams had purposely bent the cards in order to win and that he had cheated based on two different reasons.  One being that each time Williams would cut the deck, one of the Accumulated Knowledge cards would be on top.  Secondly, each time the judges tried to cut the deck a different way, one of the Accumulated Knowledge cards was always there.

Williams obviously denied that he cheated, but did admit to the cards being marked as he could see this for himself as everyone else could.  Due to this instance, Williams was suspended from Magic: The Gathering tournaments by DCI for an entire year.  Williams would not give up so easily and was not going to let his dream of poker go right past him because of this unfortunate event.  Williams then began playing high-stakes Texas hold ‘em, where he made plenty of money before returning from his suspension to the Magic tournaments.

Williams made his first appearance at the 2004 World Series of Poker event where he finished runner-up to Greg Raymer, but still won an astounding $3.5 million.  After this event, Williams also became a member of Team Bodog.  Williams was able to earn his very first WSOP bracelet in the 2006 $1,000 Seven-card stud event where he was able to defeat John Hoang.  A few months later, David made his appearance at the World Poker Tour final table where he finished second at the Borgata Open WPT where he won over half a million dollars.  He then went on in March of 2006 to finish 4th place in the WPT final table and two months later to finish 4th again at the WPT final table.

David Williams’ mother, Shirley Williams, attends his poker events as well as competes in her own ever so often.  She even withstood her own son in the 2006 World Series of Poker main event.  She appeared and played in the $1,000 LIPS, which is a ladies only WSOP event and she also attended the 2007 WSOP event.

It is believed that Williams’ live tournament earnings exceed $ 6 million and Williams says he enjoys playing in Magic tournaments as well as professional poker tournaments and plans to continue doing both.  He says he plays Magic for the fun and love of the game and he plays professional poker for the money he makes!
