One of the most popular Australian poker players and sports betters is Gary Benson.  Gary Benson became the very first Australian to win a World Series of Poker event in 1996, which has really made him the great poker player that he is today.

Benson was born in 1957 in Sydney, Australia.  As a child, Gary got very involved in playing competitive chess.  This led him to join the competitive chess League of Australia in 2003 before being awarded the International Master title for Correspondence Chess in the following year after.  In 2005, Benson was honored with the Senior International Master title. 

Gary Benson graduated from the University of Technology in Sydney in 1983 with a Business Bachelor’s degree and went on well within this field.  Benson was still a child when his beloved grandmother got him interested in card games, while still in school.  His first technical poker game was administered in the late 1970s, much before he started playing professional poker.  However, in 1995, he decided to pursue a long-dreamed for aspiration in the poker and sports betting world – a full-time career.

1987 is the year that Gary Benson attended the first Australian Poker Championship that was held in Adelaide.  Since that time, Benson has attended almost every major poker event held in New Zealand and Australia.
