The other night, I played with my friends. There was player A, B, and so on and so forth. Player A went all in and I called the all in as player B. Then next was player C who raised and player D called.

Later on, I tried to check but some did told me that I have to call or fold player C because of having some chips. I was hesitant to do any of the two for I only wanted to compete for the all in and not the side pot actually.

If you were on my shoes that time, what will you do?

Gian
Gian,

Since player C had more chips than you, you had to either call their raise, or fold. The side pot is still part of the original hand. You cannot only compete for the main pot.

Hello,
I’ve got here a few questions. Hope you could find some time to answer them. Thanks in advance.

For an instance, the blinds are 500 and 1,000 but the person who is supposed to be the big blind has only about 800 to post and a number of players are still on board. I don’t know whether or not these players have to post 1,000 in order to stay in or otherwise just match the 800 of the big blind.

In what specific situations do you think there are no small or big blinds? I’m not so sure, but I think you already shared something about such before.

For example there is a King high straight on the board and it’s the best hand. However, in the later part, it turned out that one of the players also holds a King in his pocket hand. What do you think, does the King that first occurred on the board overrule the King in pocket hand? Or else, the player could claim the hand?

For an instance the blinds are 100 and 200, then after the flop, a certain player raises to 400. I’m wondering if the player to the left of the one who raises wants to raise, does he need to raise to 800 or just double the big blind otherwise? Any idea about this?

Thanks,
Francis
Francis,

The players need to call the full 1,000 blind amount.

The only possible way there would not be a blind would be a case that both opponent were all-in for the ante. There are instances in a tournament where a small blind is eliminated the hand prior to their turn to post. In that case there would not be a small blind.

The player king in his hand is irrelevant. The object of Holdem is to make the best five card hand. Since the best five card hand is on board, everyone still in the pot splits the pot.

A reraise must be in the amount of the prior raise. In this case, they must raise to 800.

Hello,

I have a question, it’s something about what happened to me in a no limit game online. I’m actually heads up and by the river, there is an A high straight up on the table. Well, there aren’t three card to a flush, therefore the nuts are still on. Then, my opponent called for a check so I go all in. Suddenly, he made a call and we divided the pot.

After that, I received a message from that player telling me that what I did just increased the rake so the casino ended up making more than we do. Well, I believe I did the right thing for it was a split pot and we are in a low limit type of game.

Any comment about what happened?

Thanks!
Norman
Norman,

Your opponent was saying that there wasn’t any reason to bet since there is an ace high straight on the board. He is correct. You basically increased the pot and gave the card room more money. When a nut hand is on the board, betting will usually only put money in the casino’s pocket. There isn’t any point to it.

For about two months now, I’ve been playing poker. There are certain things like main pot-side pot thing I don’t fully understand.

Do you know any program or web site that could help me out practice the main pot-side pot thing? I want to totally improve myself in terms of such.

Thanks and nice site!
Anthony
Anthony,

When a player goes all in and more than one opponent calls, a side pot is made for the other two players to continue betting on. The all-in player is not eligible for the side pot. The main pot is the pot that the all-in player is eligible for. Once the end of the hand is reached, the winning player between the two in the side pot is awarded that pot and then the winner of the main pot is decided between the winner of the side pot and the all-in player. Also, if at any time one of the players folds in the side pot, they forfeit their rights to the main pot.

I’m a lover of Limit Holdem. And because of your articles, I have improved a lot in terms of skills and strategies for Limit Holdem.

The first time I played, I don’t know what to do and my goal was just to win money. But when I learned more and more things about how to play, I became more enthusiastic and more sensible when it comes to goals and the like. However, for awhile now, I’ve been playing fake money, so I became bored.

I like and love the game, but there’s no challenge when there’s no at stake. No stake to run after, to get, etc. So as of the moment, I’m planning to try games with real cash stakes. Do you think it’s actually the best thing to do?

By the way, I’m also bothered about players doing all in every hand, or keep raising in limit game which I believe works on individuals. Well, I’m not that worried when the game is 1 v1, but when already more than 4 people, it’s already a different story. Typically, I would try to raise, then he raise back as always, so others just call, making the entire game nonsense. Any advise with this?

Thanks in advance,
Alex
Alex,

Definitely give live cash games a try. At lower limits you will run across a lot of limpers usually. You two choices are to either play strong hands and try and punish your opponents when you have them or to loosen up your hands and see a lot of flops cheap. When you hit, you extract maximum value for your hands.
