The other night, I played with my friends. There was player A, B, and so on and so forth. Player A went all in and I called the all in as player B. Then next was player C who raised and player D called.

Later on, I tried to check but some did told me that I have to call or fold player C because of having some chips. I was hesitant to do any of the two for I only wanted to compete for the all in and not the side pot actually.

If you were on my shoes that time, what will you do?

Gian
Gian,

Since player C had more chips than you, you had to either call their raise, or fold. The side pot is still part of the original hand. You cannot only compete for the main pot.

Hello,

I’m really interested of trying poker, that’s why though I’m from Hungary and hardly can’t understand English, I still made some effort to temporarily move to London to complete the first step – learn English.

For about two months now, I’ve been playing poker. There are certain things like main pot-side pot thing I don’t fully understand.

Do you know any program or web site that could help me out practice the main pot-side pot thing? I want to totally improve myself in terms of such.

Thanks and nice site!
Anthony
Anthony,

When a player goes all in and more than one opponent calls, a side pot is made for the other two players to continue betting on. The all-in player is not eligible for the side pot. The main pot is the pot that the all-in player is eligible for. Once the end of the hand is reached, the winning player between the two in the side pot is awarded that pot and then the winner of the main pot is decided between the winner of the side pot and the all-in player. Also, if at any time one of the players folds in the side pot, they forfeit their rights to the main pot.
